Offshore to Backyard

I always appreciate the opportunity to talk to other professionals in our shifting and often nebulous field of IT. This week after interactions with other companies, I have noticed first-hand some trending changes that have caught my attention. Although our home town is only a small sampling of what is going on in the rest of the software development world, we have some local software shops of significant size supporting multi-billion dollar giants like Tractor Supply, ServPro, and HCA Health Systems to name a few. Although I could bore you with developer lingo and leave it with that, I'll just sum up one trend with this thought: Some of Microsoft's newer developer strategies are gaining ground. In fact, [disclaimer- programmer lingo coming] - ASP.NET MVC, which is a web application development strategy supporting web sites using Microsoft servers, has now reached a level of maturity with its version 6 release that places it in a position to be the chosen platform for new and upgraded Microsoft web sites. That being said, the next trend has more importance for those of us hunting for opportunities in the good 'ol USA.

As more companies establish deeper web initiatives, geared toward mobile and tablet platforms using frameworks like MVC, they are also returning to homegrown and backyard talent as a primary source. For a long while, offshore contract programming was all the rave, promising cheaper development projects with good quality. Lately we are seeing a greater emphasis on security, protecting our software and our information, and keeping things inside the borders to limit the risk of tampering, hacking, or even backdoor infiltration of our computing systems. This bodes well for those of us on U.S. soil who are trying to make a living writing software. Keep your eyes open for some new ideas coming out of Sent Software focused on the trend that backyard talent is better after all than offshore discount labor.

In the meantime, if you are interested in working with a solid, stable company with proven backyard talent, drop us a line. We can help you build some powerful software solutions cost effectively -- and stay inside the borders.
